  • Soo Locks

    The Soo Locks, located on the St. Marys River, allow freighters to navigate between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and international markets. This essential transportation link moves nearly 86 million tons of cargo annually, including 95% of the United States’ iron ore.

     Visitors to the Soo Locks can take in the sights and sounds of mammoth lake freighters and distinctive vessels, such as tall ships, sailboats, cruise ships, and military crafts locking into Lake Superior or Huron. The observation platform located in the Soo Locks Park provides a fantastic vantage point to watch the locking process. The park also boasts a lit fountain, manicured gardens, a beautiful Japanese archway, and trees representing those found throughout the Upper Peninsula.

  • Museum Ship Valley Camp

    Built in 1917 and retired in 1966, the Museum Ship Valley Camp is 550 feet in length and now features a variety of displays that will educate and entertain the entire family.

    More than 100 exhibits populate the ship’s cargo hold. What once held coal, iron ore, and limestone is now home to displays showcasing maritime memories, shipwrecks, lighthouses, and local history. Stroll at your own pace and soak up the romance and peril of life on the inland lakes.

    Visitors are fascinated by the exhibit featuring the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald. The unexplained sinking strikes a chord still today. Museum visitors flock to see the largest recovered pieces of wreckage – 2 lifeboats. The exhibit includes a film recap of the tragedy that claimed the lives of 29 sailors in 1975.

    Take a walk around the deck of the Valley Camp. Look in on the wheelhouse and sleeping quarters see how the crew lived aboard the Freighter.

    The Museum Ship Valley Camp is open to visitors from Mid-May through Mid-October.

  • Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum

    A Leader among America’s privately supported Maritime Institutions, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society operates the popular Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Michigan, located at the Whitefish Point Light Station, a National Historic Site in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum features the Coast Guard Lifeboat Station Quarters, which was built in 1923. The Society also offers programs at its U.S. Weather Bureau Building in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, an element of Soo Locks Park National Historic Landmark. The Shipwreck Museum is open daily from May 1 through October 31.

  • Tower of History

    Panoramic views of international proportion are found atop three viewing platforms at the Tower of History. Step onto the open air decks or glassed observation areas and watch as the St. Marys River unfolds before you. At a height of 210 feet an express elevator escorts you to the top where a 20-mile view awaits you. Identification panels assist as you spot local landmarks, including the Soo Locks. Historic displays tell the story of the area’s origins.

    The Tower of History is open to visitors from Mid-May through Mid-October.

    History & Exhibits

    The Tower of History was built in 1968 by the Catholic Church as the Shrine of the Missionaries. It was donated to the Sault Historic Sites in 1980 after the Church cut funds for other endeavors. The Tower of History remains true to its original mission of telling the tale of the early Missionaries but its focus has opened up to both local and Native American History.  The lower level of the tower has informational exhibits along with a video presentation. Go up the elevator to the upper level and experience a once in a life time view, exhibit space, and descriptions of the surroundings that you are looking out onto.

    Pictured Rocks Cruises, LLC is an authorized concessionaire of the National Park Service Department of the Interior and has been guiding the public to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for over 50 years. Each boat cruise takes between two and a half to three hours and will bring guests in to and alongside the most visually stunning 40 miles of shoreline on the Great Lakes!

    We offer three distinct cruise opportunities to all of our visitors. They are the regular cruise, the Spray Falls cruise and the sunset cruise.

    The regular cruise runs from mid-morning throughout the afternoon.
    The Spray Falls voyage take place in the late afternoon and includes an extended route that offers views of the beautiful Spray Falls.
    The sunset cruise is the last tour of the day and gives guests a special view of the rock formations as the glow from the setting sun creates a picturesque scene on Lake Superior.

    During each tour we depart from the Munising City Dock where our experienced captains and crew will let you know a breif history about the boat you are traveling on and some local area facts. The crew will assist in ticketing, safety instructions and any other needs that may arise. Each cruise will be fully narrated by our crew over the public address system and can be heard from any location on the boat.
